THE boy ran toward the cliff.

Archibald dashed after him. The sun-whitened tiny bones of frogs and bats crunched beneath his boots as they fled along a precarious goat path skirting the edge of the precipice.

Archibald looked over his shoulder.

The bandidos were in hot pursuit. Far below, at the base of the rock wall, sea waves roared and smashed themselves on the shore, sending the stones on the beach tumbling in a thunderous rumpus.

He and the boy ran as fast as they could along the edge of the cliff. Archibald was hoping for some way down, some route by which to escape their pursuers, but he saw none.

Ramón dashed on.

Archibald hoped the boy knew where he was going.

Archibald could hear the desperate men closing in.

A homemade spear thudded into the ground close by his feet.

Archibald stumbled over the shaft of the spear, and nearly went over the edge of the cliff. He recovered his balance just in time.

The Walking Meat have fashioned spears for themselves. I am a naval officer. I should stop and fight them off. Maybe I can buy time for Ramón to get away.

He turned to face his spear-throwing pursuers. He drew his sword.

Eight half-starved men in goat skins with bulging eyes and goitered necks rushed towards him.
